Landfill with a Solar 'Cap'
Landfills generally look like huge dumps and are known for their ability to create Methane which can be tapped for energy. But a company in the state of Georgia, USA, has come up with the novel idea of making use of the extensive surface area to create a second energy source - using solar cells. Since dumps can change shape over time with the breaking down of waste, there has been apprehension of structural damage to the support for the solar panels. But here they have used a very creative idea of using a geomembrane made of Thermoplastic PolyOlefin (similar to…
Solar is à la mode
I have been a big fan of solar power ever since I heard about it as as a kid in class 6 or 7. We were taught that we could generate electricity with the light of the sun, which being a never-ending resource was referred to as a “renewable” source of energy. I found it quite fascinating that sunlight could be so ‘powerful’ even as I had no idea how electricity was generated conventionally. And neither did I have any idea over the years it took me to reach the information age to understand the challenges – posed by technology…
Google Invests A Bulky Amount in Solar Projects
Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has faith in the solar industry. And recently the company has proved this by investing $280 million in the San Mateo, California company SolarCity. SolarCity designs and installs solar systems for residential homes in Arizona, California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Homeowners can buy these panels for their homes to run off solar energy. Or they can lease them. The leasing option provides a much cheaper option for homeowners who want to get rid of their high energy bill for the greener, cleaner option but can’t actually afford to buy…
Gehrlicher Solar sells 5 PV power plants in Italy
Berlin-based White Owl Capital had acquired 5 PV power plants built by Gehrlicher Solar Italia, a subsidiary of Gehrlicher Solar for an undisclosed sum. Using First Solar CdTe thin film modules and SMA inverters, all the plants were grid connected before feed-in tariffs were reduced at the end of August, 2011. The projects, with a total power of 10.4MWp, are situated in the regions of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy."We are very satisfied that we can expand our long-standing collaboration with the sale of our projects to White Owl Capital. We value WOC as an experienced partner for investment…
