World's Biggest Wave Farm's Future Uncertain as RWE npower Pulls Out

In a move that stunned the renewable energy world, the German utility RWE pulled out of the Siadar Wave Energy Project off the coast of the Scottish island of Lewis. The fate of this project is now in the hands of the other developer, Voith Hydro Wavegen, a renewable energy company based in Inverness. Wavegen has indicated that they are in discussions to find a new owner/investor in the plant.

The Siadar Wave Energy Project had been intended to generate 4 megawatts of electricity from next year onwards. This would have been enough to power 2,500 homes.

Ocean technologies, with the exception of tidal barrages, are at the demonstration and pilot project phases and many require additional research and development. Some of the technologies have variable energy output profiles with differing levels of predictability (for instance, wave, tidal range and current), while others may be capable of near-constant or even controllable operation (for instance, ocean thermal and salinity gradient).

Ocean Power Technologies deploys Spanish wave unit - New utility-scale wave power station expected to eventually deliver 1.39MW of power off the coast of Spain.
