Retrofit proposed for Chicago’s Marina City Towers

Paris-based Influx Studio has proposed a retrofit of the Marina City Towers, Chicago, which will result in several green innovations and architectural features integrated into the buildings, including provisions for renewable energy production, vertical agriculture, and production of cleaner air. The firm has proposed an algae green loop retrofit for both the buildings. Both the buildings will have a series of vertical wind turbines that can turn regardless of the direction. Provision for CO2 scrubbers below the turbines have also been proposed. These will act to absorb CO2, which can be used by the algae bioreactors to produce biofuels. The excess CO2 could be sold to pharmaceutical companies.

The balconies would be covered with photovoltaic panels and waste water from the apartments would be purified and reused. Vertical farming is also expected to be integrated in the gardens and the balconies. - read more
