NUI Galway joins € 14 million algae project

NUI Galway’s Ryan Institute is now a part of the € 14 million “EnAlgae” project- a European initiative to develop algae as a potential source of sustainable energy. As a partner, NUI Galway will be responsible for the initial step to produce the biomass that will be converted to biofuel over the next four years- i.e. cultivating the macroalgae (seaweed) at sea in a 1 ha pilot facility.

The project will focus on the cultivation of some of Ireland’s native kelp species, including large brown seaweeds. Growth of the seaweed crop occurs in two phases, the first phase of which is being carried out at the Ryan Institute’s Carna Research Station in Co. Galway. Seaweed will also be cultivated in Northern Ireland and Brittany in France, with NUI Galway coordinating the cultivation efforts between all three institutions. - read more
