Europe's e-Waste is Ghana's problem

European e-waste is damaging human health and the environment in Ghana. Each month, around 600 containers of mostly obsolete second-hand electronics arrive in Ghana. Most of this ends up being burned at dump-sites. The UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Italy and Spain are the top seven European countries that export used computers to Ghana. Thousands of people work in the informal waste industry in Ghana and children constitute around 40% of the scrap workers at Agbogbloshie dumpsite alone. Health-damaging exposure to e-waste can result in long term, often irreversible, effects such as infertility, miscarriage, tumors, endocrine diseases and birth defects.
makeITfair is Europe wide project aimed at raising awareness among both consumers and industry players about the human and environmental impact of electronics goods across their entire life cycle.

Micro Auto Gasification System

Micro Auto Gasification System

U.S. Marines based at Camp Smith, Hawaii are testing a small scale waste gasification system developed by Terragon Environmental Technologies. The tests are being conducted in partnership with the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and are aimed at reducing a standard 50 gallon (190 litre) bag of waste to a half pint (275 ml) jar of harmless ash. Dubbed the Micro Auto Gasification System (MAGS), Terragon said that the unit is currently undergoing evaluation by U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific (MARFORPAC) as a possible solution to increasing waste volumes at remote Forward Operating Bases (FOB).

E-Waste Management and Processing Techniques

With the constant advancement of our world’s technology, electronic equipment is rendered obsolete in the blink of an eye. These broken, discarded and obsolete products are known as e-waste, and it all too often ends up in the trash. These items can be recycled and have many more years of productive usage, in another form. Basically, if it is an electronic product, it can and should be recycled. The life of an electronic component doesn’t have to end just because it will no longer work for you.

Tackling E-waste: The Story of Electronics

The production of electrical and electronic equipment is one of the fastest growing manufacturing activities worldwide. The emergent market penetration in developing countries, turnover in the developed world, and high obsolescence rates make e-waste also one of the fastest growing waste streams globally.
This video has host Annie Leonard taking viewers from the mines and factories where gadgets begin to the horrific backyard recycling shops in China where many end up. The film concludes with a call for a green race to the top where designers compete to make long-lasting, toxic-free products that are fully and easily recyclable.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Plastic trash has made its way to the Pacific Ocean and its collected in massive amounts out in the middle of a 10 million square mile area known as the Pacific Gyre (pronounced G-I-R-E) which is also known as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Gyre is a large clockwise spinning vortex that basically sucks everything into itself and because plastic is not biodegradable and cannot be broken down naturally it will just continue to circle the Gyre for decades maybe even centuries. This plastic soup is wreaking unimaginable havoc on the areas ecosystems. More than 1 million sea birds die from ingesting the plastic thinking that its food. Turtles are choking on plastic shopping bags, which look amazingly like jelly fish, the main prey of turtles. The answer to stopping this madness is to STOP USING SO MUCH FUCKIN PLASTIC. And for the plastic that you do use, try to recycle it or better yet, REUSE it!
