Energy efficiency is the most important single future source of energy to supply the growing energy demand and to protect the climate. Being energy efficient in industry, mobility and housing will offer the biggest potential to use energy more efficient. Just through energy efficiency and with already existing technologies its possible to curb our predicted increasing global energy demand and thus the CO2-emissions by the year 2030 significantly.

A new X Challenge to clean up oil spills

Being announced right now in Washington, DC: A brand-new X Challenge to combat oil spills. The Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X Challenge is a $1.4 million prize to promote development of new technologies and techniques to capture spilled oil. As Peter Diamandis said at the announcement: “We are not rewarding someone for existing technology. We want to help create new technologies.”

How to make charcoal briquettes from agricultural waste

Demonstration on how to make charcoal briquettes, by Amy Smith of D-Lab, MIT (http://web.mit.edu/d-lab/). For more information, please contact charcoal@mit.edu. The charcoal is made from agricultural waste materials using an oil drum. In this case maize stalks were used. The charcoal is compressed to briquettes using a simple hand-operated press. The demonstration was held during the IPIDAT 2009 meeting.
