Volkswagen will work with Solazyme and Amyris to evaluate emissions reductions and to demonstrate the performance of TDI® Clean Diesel Technology when powered by advanced biodiesel and renewable diesel fuel. Under these agreements, Volkswagen will provide both the companies with 2 products each- a 2012 Passat TDI and the 2012 Jetta TDI, which will be closely examined for the effects of the fuels produced by Amyris and Solazyme.
Amyris produces fuel from plant-sourced sugars which can be converted into renewable hydrocarbons while Solazyme uses microalgae to produce fuel. The evaluation will go on for 12 months which will aid Volkswagen in the ongoing enhancement of TDI Clean Diesel technology and help the brand to develop more efficient, cleaner burning diesel powertrains for future products.
