  • Hey guys,
How can i measure lipid or oil content in microalgae at labscale? Also, if you can, please direct me to good literature? Thanx

    • Selvas 2 years ago

5 g dry algal biomass - grind with 5 ml methanol using mortal and pestle then add 75 ml (2:1) chlorofm:methnl...centrifg it..collect the solvnt. repeat the step 3 to 5 times...compain all the solvent add 25% of water from the total solvnt......phase wll separt (within half hour) collect the chlorom layer(lower)..dry it (fully)...weigh the dry lipid material...... calcultin = obtaind lipid weight /taken biomass x 100........ u can get the total lipid...... u need only nonpolar lipid just use hexane thats it.....all d bset

  • I found a photo of a Gorlov Helical Wind Turbine online, and would like to know if such a turbine is available for purchase as a wind electric generator. If anyone has info on a manufacturer, please let me know. Thank you.

  • All right, you could say I take a high moral ground while asking this question, but there it is.

I am a strict vegetarian by choice, and my preference is guided primarily by ethics ("killing animals when they don't harm us is wrong"). But I am here not to discuss the ethics of vegetarianism (which I will be glad to discuss on My Desk), but the sustainability of being vegetarian.

Apart from the obvious greenhouse gases increase owing to the large number of cattle population because of non-vegetarianism, there could be other aspects that hinder a progress to sustainable world.

So, being vegetarian is not only ethical but also makes the world more sustainable. So, why isn't the world not turning vegetarian? Is it because they cannot control their taste buds? That sounds like such a crime!

    What are your thoughts?

There is nothing wrong with killing animals to feed ourselves, because this is what they are created for. Our bodies need vegetables as well as meats.

  • Hi there, what is the metal ion which have toxic effect on microalgae? or what is the heavy metals that affecting algal growth?

    • Gaya3 2 years ago

Generally the order of metal toxicity which affects the algal species is Hg> Cu>Cd>Ag>Pb>Zn. Mercury being the most toxic metal affects the enzyme systems of the algae and inhibits their functions. Copper is used to control the algal blooms in fresh water. The extent of toxicity depends on the ionic content or free Cu2+ ions available in the algal culture and not the total copper concentration.

  • Hey guys,

Did you have any reference that i could read, a good one, on a lab scale experiment conducted to study bio-fuel production from microalgae? the steps mentioned from A to Z till the actual extraction of the oil?

    Thanx a bunch

  • Dear All,
we collected some samples for our bio-fuel project and after a couple of days some of them started producing a very bad smell and it gets stronger day after day. The problem is we don't know what's causing the smell and we couldn't find anything about it in the literature.

Can anyone please help us to understand whats going on!

  • Does anyone know where i can buy pure samples of algae? with high lipid content-for biofuel testing? Our group wants to try exposing these samples to different conditions related to our climate to reach a superior specie of algae that is best for biofuel production in the uae?
and i think im going to try getting my university to buy it for me? so i need to tell them the full procedure. Thanx for the help guys
