What does it cost to replace batteries in any standard EV (car and bike), including removal, disposal and installation?

  Right now, it would cost around $18000 to replace a battery pack in the Nissan Leaf. But Nissan says that by the time current buyers will have to replace their battery packs in a few years(at least 5 or more), the cost will be down to hundreds of dollars.

BMW and Toyota are reportedly planning to cooperate on research into lithium-ion batteries for Electric Cars (http://www.inautonews.com/bmw-and-toyota-to-cooperate-on-ev-batteries). The cooperation between Toyota and BMW will help the two companies find ways to make the lithium-ion batteries lighter and less expensive, with electric cars costing twice as much as conventional cars. Nissan Motor Co, Renault and Daimler are already working on various joint projects, sharing engines and other technologies to save on R&D costs.

  To add to the above observation, I found another article that pointed out to the possibility that besides co-operation between automakers, there could be a better result if automakers teamed up with companies that that have built up their expertise in developing electric / electronic items. Repeated crash tests on Chevy Volts have resulted in serious battery fires. How serious is this issue? Will people still be interested in EVs big time if they are found to be more prone to fires than your average car?
