The Yasuni ITT initiative has been successful in collecting a sum of nearly $116 million to protect the 900 million barrels of crude oil lying beneath the Amazon Basin. This step will help in cutting down the carbon emissions which is estimated to equal the annual emission of a country like France. In addition this will also help in protecting two tribals indigenous to this region. With 90 percent of the public in Ecuador, where the oil rich basin is located, supporting this initiative, the next step of the country would be in publicising the campaign.

Joshwolf shared a picture GREEN ROOF IN ST. PAUL 5 months ago
I'm creating an environmental education program at an intercity school called DIVINE Institute in St Paul, Minnesota to reach at risk students. The program will feature a $12,000 green roof equipped with solar panels, algae photo-bioreactors, and solar heating for the building. So far, I have raised $8,000 in grant funding!
I'm looking for people interested in donating to this non-profit effort or people interested in contributing information you would like included into the curriculum, so I would love to here from you all!in Biodiesel Algae Fuels Green Buildings Biodiversity CO2 Sequestration Public Transportation Cleantech Education in Schools Cleantech Careers and Jobs

Divyajeychandren shared a picture Hidden cameras reveal endangered rhino 5 months ago
HIDDEN cameras in the jungles of Indonesia's Java island have captured images of 35 critically endangered Javan rhinos, including five calves, an official has said.
The forestry ministry set up 44 infrared cameras from January to October this year in the rugged Ujung Kulon National Park on the western-most tip of Java.
To boost conservation efforts, the ministry is finalising a rhino breeding sanctuary in an area of 38,000ha inside the 122,000ha (300,000-acre) national park.
elieved to live in Ujung Kulon, a rare patch of wilderness on one of the world's most densely populated islands.
They form the world's only viable population of the critically endangered species capable of reproducing.
Asian rhinos have been driven to the brink of extinction because their horns are highly valued in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine, although most countries in the region have banned the trade.in Biodiversity

This projection is only for plant species apparently. I think this part of the article might explain this projection better: "The researchers found a shift of biomes, or major ecological community types, toward Earth’s poles – most dramatically in temperate grasslands and boreal forests – and toward higher elevations. Ecologically sensitive “hotspots” – areas projected to undergo the greatest degree of species turnover – that were identified by the study include regions in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, eastern equatorial Africa, Madagascar, the Mediterranean region, southern South America, and North America’s Great Lakes and Great Plains areas. The largest areas of ecological sensitivity and biome changes predicted for this century are, not surprisingly, found in areas with the most dramatic climate change: in the Northern Hemisphere high latitudes, particularly along the northern and southern boundaries of boreal forests."

Divyajeychandren shared a picture Coral bleaching 5 months ago
Coral bleaching occurs when, due to stress, the coral expels the zooxanthellae algae with which it has a symbiotic relationship. This stress can come in the form of higher water temperatures, increased solar radiation, ocean acidification, and a loss of food in the form of zooplankton due to overfishing.
The term "coral bleaching" was coined because the algae gives the coral its color, thus when the algae is expelled, the coral loses its color. Without the algae the coral cannot survive, leading to a chain of events which can leave areas of ocean lifeless. Coral is the major backbone of many ocean ecologies, and if it dies then many other life forms in the area may leave or die as well. -
Greenpeace launched the make-believe Republic of Junglistan from its ‘embassy’ at Elliot’s Beach, Chennai, India. The movement aims to seek people’s support to stop the destruction of forests for coal mining. The campaign registers its protest against land grabbing by the coal mining industries, which endangers animal and plant species. ‘Bhaalu’ and ‘Shera’, the endangered residents of Junglistan, handed out the virtual citizenships and passports. The nationwide drive, launched simultaneously in Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai, hopes to spread to other major cities and become viral online. The mascots- Shera and Bhaalu will tour Chennai to raise awareness.

Ramnath and team are spotting green soldiers in schools across Tamil Nadu to build their new movement, Youth for Conservation. Call them climate champs, tree huggers or tiger enthusiasts, these Captain Planets of tomorrow clearly believe that when it comes to saving the earth, the power is yours.
YFC has been in germination for a couple of years and will officially take off in January 2012 with the launch of its interactive web portal, http://www.yfc.in. But the movement has already put out roots by connecting with school students all over the state.

Scientists Discover Fish in Act of Evolution in Africa’s Lake - In what could be a first in the world, a fish species known as cichlids has been discovered by scientists in the act of splitting into two distinct species in Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake and one of the world’s biggest fresh water bodies. This may be remarkable because what is causing them to diverge are adaptations to their vision as animals and plants try to cope with increased pollution and the effects of climate change. - http://ecoworldly.com/2008/10/07/scientists-discover-fish-in-act-of-evolution-in-africas-greatest-la

Artificial Trees to Capture Energy - The technology, courtesy Solar Botanic, makes use of artificial plants and trees that can harness the power of the sun, wind and rain. Solar Botanic states that the key to this master technology is the use of something they call “The Nanoleaf.” This Nanoleaf consists not only of solar and thermal cells to harness the sun, but also comes with branches that generate electricity when they are moved by the wind. - http://www.ecofriend.org/entry/eco-tech-solar-botanic-envisions-a-renewable-powerhouse-in-your-backy
