The Yasuni ITT initiative has been successful in collecting a sum of nearly $116 million to protect the 900 million barrels of crude oil lying beneath the Amazon Basin. This step will help in cutting down the carbon emissions which is estimated to equal the annual emission of a country like France. In addition this will also help in protecting two tribals indigenous to this region. With 90 percent of the public in Ecuador, where the oil rich basin is located, supporting this initiative, the next step of the country would be in publicising the campaign.

Arunpillai wants to discuss Coal Use Shrinks while Clean Energy Expands 1 year ago
A new report today from the U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA) confirms that America is moving beyond coal, though the EIA understates how dim coal's prospects are. According to the 2012 energy outlook, coal-fired electricity will continue its steady decline in 2012, opening market space for clean energy.

Arunpillai wants to discuss Learning To Be An Energy Journalist 1 year ago
Things are not always as they seem.
The author of this article was working as an Associate Editor of AOL Energy when she interviewed an "expert" professor in the field of Wind Energy. This expert stated that wind power was not as simple as it seemed and not as free and clean as a nature-lover would have hoped and that long and expensive transmission lines make wind power one of the most costly renewables to connect to the grid.
Several months later she learned that her "expert" source was a full time consultant to utilities and power companies, many of whom were incumbent fossil fuel companies that compete with wind!

Arunpillai shared a picture Bioenergy - Traditional & Future Uses 1 year ago
All energy derived from biological sources is BIOENERGY. Whether the net environmental, social and climate impacts of bioenergy are positive or negative will depend largely on what policy and market safeguards are put in place. WWF’s Living Forests Report is part of a year-long conversation with partners, policymakers and business about how forests can contribute to the vision that: “humanity’s global footprint stays within the Earth’s ecological limits and the planet’s natural resources are shared equitably”.
The report uses the Living Forests Model to explore pathways to achieve and maintain WWF’s target of Zero Net Deforestation and Forest Degradation (ZNDD) by 2020. The goal is to compare different future scenarios, look at the implications of policies and inform debate.
