Chennai Corporation seizes 12 tonnes of mangoes ripened by harmful chemical

There seems to be no end to artificial ripening of fruits using dangerous chemicals in the city. Officials of the public health department of Chennai Corporation seized 12 tonnes of artificially ripened mangoes and papaya on Wednesday.

In a similar exercise at the market a fortnight ago, the health team seized the same quantity of mangoes for using hazardous calcium carbide to ripen the fruits. The use of chemical is banned, because it may contain traces of arsenic and phosphorus which pose serious threat to human health. The ill effects of the chemical include dizziness, peptic ulcer, diarrhoea, numbness of hands and legs, vision disorders and memory loss.
