Arunpillai posted a blog Recycling - what is it all about? 5 months ago
Every responsible and sustainable Earthizen believes in Recycling as a very important part of Green Living so as to take advantage of already existing processed material to avoid the use of more resources and raw material.
What many of us forget is that before Recycling, come the 2 other Rs - Reduce and Reuse.
To Reduce is as important as it brings down the energy spent on production and also reduces the requirement of the resources that are used to produce the object.
Next comes Reuse - which basically prevents the need to recycle at all if an object can be…- 1 person added this post to their reference

Divyajeychandren wants to discuss Can we keep up with e-waste? 5 months ago
We need to put a stronger emphasis not just on recycling but on two other areas:
Design innovation. Especially ideas have recycling and refurbishment in mind from the beginning, maybe a strong emphasis on systems that can be upgraded to faster and better within their original chassis. After all, you remodel homes, why not computers?
Reuse efforts. There are some great donation and reuse programs that direct older systems to worthy causes or into the education area; these causes should get a lot more visibility than they do. We also need to find a way to scale them more elegantly.
Reclamation. The SBI Energy report notes that many of the materials found in electronics components — especially lead, copper and gold — could command some serious value and pose an alternative market to mining for this materials anew.

Divyajeychandren wants to discuss Bio-Grow by Mark Schnitzer & Co. 7 months ago
Bio-Grow by Mark Schnitzer & Co
"Bio-Grow" took second place in the International E-Waste Design Competition 2010, incorporating refurbished waste materials—namely a laptop, an iMac and a tower enclosure—into the unassuming, bathroom sink-sized unit. The team has designed a photobioreactor for the cultivation of algae, to be later manufactured into biodiesel. Utilizing salvaged and refurbished electronic waste, the team has reinvented the components user experience. The Bio-Grow exists as both a local and global system. With the combination of these two systems, the Bio-Grow is envisioned to help solve the problems of both e-waste and oil consumption.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has called for swift passage of legislation to promote the domestic recycling of electronic toxic waste.
According to the Senator, his bill is aimed at reducing the exportation of electronic waste, or e-waste, to developing countries.
Under the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act of 2011 the export of toxic electronic waste to developing countries would be stamped out.

America Needs Proof of Responsible Electronics Recycling
Electronics recycling rates continue to climb, but does the U.S. have the necessary infrastructure?
Electronics recycling in the United States has a checkered past. Over the past decade, this rapidly developing industry has grown to $5 billion in the United States alone, according to recycling industry association ISRI. The challenge that comes with this rapid growth is ensuring that the infrastructure in the U.S. is keeping pace. This has proven to be an issue, since much of that infrastructure is still being built and there is limited oversight by state and federal governments. There are 25 states the mandate some form of an electronics recycling program for original equipment manufacturers, but some states have little oversight for the standards recyclers must meet to be a part of a manufacturer program. While some states have these landfill bans or disposal prohibitions on certain types of electronics, it is still permissible for consumers to landfill materials in much of the country.

E-waste piles up in Ghana, despite international controls
Ghana often ends up the final resting place for used electronic devices. While some of the materials can be recycled, much is also sent there illegally, damaging the environment and the people who exploit it.
