Green light for half billion dollar geothermal power station
New Zealand's growing reliance on geothermal steam to generate electricity will go up another notch in mid-2013, with state-owned MightyRiverPower Ltd announcing a new 82 Megawatt plant to be built at Ngatamariki, north of Taupo.
The $466 million project will be MRP's third in three years, having brought the 90MW Kawerau plant into production in 2008 and the 140MW Nga Awa Purua station on-line last year, in a plan announced in 2008 to build up to 400MW of new geothermal production.

Google, GE to Collaborate on Smart Grid, Geothermal - GE and Google don’t have a lot in common, but the industrial giant and the Internet powerhouse share an interesting in renewable energy. So they have come together to lobby for a so-called smart electricity grid and to collaborate, albeit in an unspecified way, in research into geothermal energy. - http://www.theenergycollective.com/TheEnergyCollective/28035

New USGS Study Says Geothermal Has High Potential - A study today from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests geothermal has the potential to generate 529.9 gigawatts of electricity in the United States. Of the untapped potential, about 9 GW could come from conventional, identified geothermal systems, the study said. More than 30 GW could come from conventional, undiscovered geothermal resources, and the remainder could come from unconventional geothermal systems with high temperatures but low permeability of rock formations. - http://www.cleantech.com/news/3592/geothermal-could-add-529-gw-us

Enhanced geothermal tech - Conventional geothermal projects make use of hydrothermal energy that can be accessed five kilometers (3.1 miles) from the surface. But enhanced geothermal tech are being used to reach the untapped geothermal resources identified in MIT & USGS reports. Techniques being studied aim to go even deeper without increasing installation, operation costs. They try to create geothermal reservoirs, stimulate production, and measure flow rates. Similar tech is being used for oil and gas fields. - http://www.cleantech.com/news/3638/glitnir-sees-surge-us-geothermal-projects

Glitnir Bank to bring geothermal to India - India has planned $475 billion in energy investments over the next five years, with $120 billion to $130 billion targeted for tax credits, but it could be a hard sell for steam power in the country. "The Indian government is kind of skeptical, because there's been a lot of people who have talked about geothermal, but they've never done anything." Glitnir is bringing plenty of expertise to India. In Iceland, 90 percent of all homes are heated with geothermal power. -- February 6, 2008 - http://www.cleantech.com/news/2415/glitnir-bank-to-bring-geothermal-to-india

Geothermal vastly underutilized in the US - Most utilities have not pursued geothermal energy primarily because up front costs, including exploratory drilling, can be high. Geothermal taps deep reservoirs, not groundwater, which collects much closer to the surface. Once in operation, plants consume no fuel. When looking at the true costs over a plant's lifetime, it is on par with or better than a coal plant. An MIT study shows that heat available underground is plentiful in USA - Nov 2007 report in Scientific American -
