We normally associate hazardous waste with industries, but even household waste could have some relatively hazardous components...here's a list of these (from the Seneca County, Ottawa Waste Collection council - http://www.recycleoss.org/Household/default.asp )

Some counties like the above have special collection for these hazardous household waste:

• Latex & Oil based paint, sealers, primers, coatings and spray aerosol paint cans
• Household pesticides (bug & rodent killers), Herbicides (weed killers), Insecticides (bug killers), Fungicides (mold killers) – solids, liquids and aerosols
• Varnish, polyurethane and shellacs, wood stains, primers and strippers, paint thinner, turpentine, kerosene and lighter fluid
• Spray aerosol cans - that are not empty
• Fluorescent and compact fluorescent bulbs
• Household Cleaners (oven & drain cleaner & muriatic acid)
• Automotive Fluids - antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene
• Mercury – liquids & thermostats
• Bring in your old mercury fever thermometer and exchange it for a new digital thermometer
• Hand-held propane cylinders
• Household batteries
• Adhesives, roof tar, driveway sealers
• Fluids will not be accepted in containers larger than 5 gallons
• Any household hazardous waste container or paint can that is completely dry can be disposed of in your trash if the lid is off
• Asbestos - I think this is super hazardous, which is why even the aforementioned company is not keen on including THIS!

Sea Scouts devise way to turn hazardous waste into cash for marinas

To help clean up our waterfront, a group of 20 high school youth and adult leaders, members of Sea Scout Ship 41, are working with local marinas to improve their used oil recycling stations. The scouts are participating in the Waterfront Challenge, an international initiative sponsored by Interlux, a worldwide manufacturer of yacht paints, aimed at encouraging people to "make a difference" by improving the quality of their local waterfronts.
