Hydrogen fluoride are used in the production of linear alkylbenzenes (LAB's), and it has been successfully replaced by a solid acid catalyst, fluoride silica-alumina catalyst which does not require special material of construction, involves lower operating costs, and obviates the need for an acid scrubbing system and waste disposal of calcium fluoride. Most importantly, it is not found to be toxic.

Why should hydrogen storage be the only way to achieve hydrogen economy? I feel hydrogen can be used along with CO2 to synthesize biofuel by Fischer Tropsch process and it could as well help in solving the global energy demands. With so much CO2 available from industrial emissions, this could be a promising alternative that could be considered ahead of hydrogen storage.

Hydrogen is not a source of energy but only a carrier of energy. Thus, technically it is not a renewable energy source. If so, why is hydrogen considered a clean energy? Does it really find practical applicability as alternative energy source?

Hydrogen fuel cell is a fairly old concept, but is still not economically viable. The technology has been emerging over past few years and still the timeframe for fuel cell commercialization is not entirely clear. Some experts expect fuel cells to play a major role in the renewable energy equation by 2020. But I personally doubt the success of hydrogen as a sustainable energy alternative.

So, either everybody else are very busy or, we all like the 'talk' position rather the responsible 'do' position. Promising research being carried out Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute suggests that we could have highly efficient hydrogen storage systems in the near future.
The technology addresses some key shortcomings in hydrogen storage with the system able to store and release hydrogen at fast rates and more importantly at low temperatures.

Hydrogen is an extremely environment friendly fuel as when it burns it releases only water vapor into the atmosphere, but the problem is that it is not easy to store it because it needs to be stored like other compressed gases. A new solid may solve the problem. A nonreactive noble gas called xenon combined with hydrogen and other massive pressure gives rise to a solid that can be later used to store hydrogen fuel. The research paper is published in the November 22, 2009, advanced online publication of Nature Chemistry.
