Most of the renewable energy initiatives have huge capital investment and long gestation time than conventional modes. This effectively shunts away most of people to use these alternative methods.
Does providing govt subsidy is the only way to make people to use these technologies ?

Narsi wants to know Are 15 MW wind turbines possible? 10 months ago
This was a recent news item I came across:
"GE begins research on 10-15 MW wind turbine
US electronics giant General Electric (GE) has begun research on a two-year, $3m project to develop wind turbines with a capacity of 10MW to 15MW.
The company said it will aim to utilise its experience in the healthcare sector of using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems to develop an advanced generator based on superconducting magnets. Traditional turbines use generators that are connected to a gearbox to produce power but when scaled up this technology becomes uneconomical because of the additional weight and maintenance requirements..."

15 MW! Is it possible for wind turbines of such massive sizes to work efficiently, without too many breakdowns and maintenance problems? And while on this, is there some kind of a theoretical limit on the size of the wind energy generator beyond which it could not work at all?in Onshore Wind

Narsi wants to know Utilizing Hurricanes for Wind Power - Turbines Working at Very High Wind Speeds 10 months ago
I was reading about hurricane Irene that is lashing United States, and wondered: How can this problem be turned into an opportunity? Imagine the amount of energy that could be generated from such tremendous speeds.
But we all know it is right now ridiculous to think that wind turbines could actually operate, leave alone optimally, at such high speeds. Even if it produces power, I doubt the evacuation facilities will be stable enough during hurricanes to handle it.
Is it possible for some technology breakthrough to turn this problem into an opportunity?in Onshore Wind

Narsi posted a question Wind Energy Capacity Utilization Factor 1 year ago
The general industry benchmarks for capacity utilization factor for wind energy is about 25%, but this varies widely from region to region. Can someone tell me what are the best CUFs that have been achieved anywhere for wind? And the lowest consistent CUFs?

BTW, one of my colleagues in the wind industry was saying there are small regions in the Tamil Nadu, a southern state in India, where onshore wind CUF could be as high as 37%...I have not double checked this, but am wondering if such high CUFs on land are possible, even if only in select areas...
