By 2030, utilities worldwide will spend $378 billion on Smart Grids, according to Innovation Observatory ( http://www.innovationobservatory.com/sgpress2 ).
That's a heck of a lot of money. Smart grid is not a point-idea, but a fairly complex framework. What component of smart grid would most these billions go into?in Smart Grid

Short but nice article...and welcome back to CleanTick, Renga! There's no questioning that networking and security - where Cisco's core strengths lie - will play critical roles in the smart grids of tomorrow. Cisco is a 800 pound gorilla all right, but the building energy market is probably not where the gorilla can really use its skills... At the building energy level, I think it is more software than networking...I think Cisco will do much better where it more networking than software...which is pretty much where smart grid is...

Renewable Integration: Solving the Volatility of a Smart Grid
In addition to frequency regulation and spinning reserve, advanced energy storage technology, including lithium ion battery systems, helps facilitate the increased penetration of renewable energy sources to the grid. Energy storage addresses the inherent variability of wind and solar, which is one of the key remaining hurdles to renewable adoption within the current power infrastructure. With the increased penetration of renewable generation, the grid is experiencing a shift from predictable dispatchable generation to variable non-dispatchable generation. This adds a new level of uncertainty and volatility to the grid that causes an array of problems as the relative proportion of variable generation vs. traditional dispatchable generation increases.

$38m smart-grid project launches in Washington state
The communities of Pullman and Albion in Washington state are embarking upon a $38 million project to test and demonstrate the benefits of a smarter, more automated energy grid.
Being led by the energy company Avista Corporation, the project will feature technology from Tropos Networks and Itron. By automating part of the energy distribution system, Avista aims to increase system reliability and reduce outage time, incorporate renewable energy sources and provide customers with more tools and information to monitor their energy usage.
The project calls for the rollout of an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), smart grid communications and distribution automation (DA) devices

India Considering Off-Grid Renewable Options for Rural Electrification - A 2001 census showed that 519,570 villages in India do not have power. While many of the villages are grid-accessible, the process of getting them hooked up has been slow. Answer? Renewable, community-based distributed grids. The ministry for new and renewable energy sources has estimated a potential for 84,776 mwe grid-interactive power generation from non-conventional sources, like agro residues, wind power, small hydro projects, cogeneration from bagasse and from industrial wastes. - http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/04/india_electricity.php
