World's Biggest Wave Farm's Future Uncertain as RWE npower Pulls Out
In a move that stunned the renewable energy world, the German utility RWE pulled out of the Siadar Wave Energy Project off the coast of the Scottish island of Lewis. The fate of this project is now in the hands of the other developer, Voith Hydro Wavegen, a renewable energy company based in Inverness. Wavegen has indicated that they are in discussions to find a new owner/investor in the plant.
The Siadar Wave Energy Project had been intended to generate 4 megawatts of electricity from next year onwards. This would have been enough to power 2,500 homes.

Australia can clean up on wave power: Carnegie - Clean power developer Carnegie Corporation says more than a third of Australia’s base-load power needs could be economically generated by wave technology, according to a report commissioned by the company.
The report, compiled by RPS MetOcean, says that Australia has a potential near-shore wave energy resource of about 171,000 megawatts (MW) – four times the country’s total installed power generation capacity, Carnegie said. - http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuId=3&ContentID=100172in Wave Energy

Pelamis Wave Energy Converter, Scotland - A pilot project: Pelamis Wave Energy Converter, based on the Orkney Islands north of Scotland. Pelamis resembles a huge snake made up of four 40-meter tubes, linked end to end, riding on the sea surface. Waves make the segments flex against each other, driving hydraulic rams that, in turn, drive electric generators. By next year, said the operator, Pelamis Wave Power Ltd. (www.pelamiswave.com), it hopes to supply the power that 10 percent of Orkney’s 20,000 inhabitants need. - http://www.boulderweekly.com/20080904/newsbriefs11.html
